Project Overview

Henley Restoration & Remedials Ltd, a specialist division within the Henley Construction Management Group, successfully delivered a comprehensive package of structural restoration and remedial works for our client, CML Civil Engineering, at the iconic Tate & Lyle Sugar Silo in Liverpool.

Situated within Huskisson Dock, this Grade II* listed industrial building is an integral part of Liverpool’s maritime legacy. Spanning over 85,000 sq ft, the silo historically served as a major hub for sugar importation and storage, featuring innovative conveyor and railway systems.

Heritage Context

Recognised as a leading example of post-war industrial architecture, the Sugar Silo’s distinctive curved roof structure, glazed brick façades, and elevated conveyor frameworks present both architectural value and engineering significance.

Its Grade II* status underscores its national importance, requiring all interventions to meet strict conservation criteria while preserving original features wherever possible.

Delivered Scope of Work

Henley Restoration & Remedials was appointed to carry out a specialist programme of remedial and conservation activities, including:

• Blast Hatch Waterproofing

Targeted remedial works were undertaken on both the upper and mid-level blast hatches to ensure long-term watertight integrity. All waterproofing operations were completed using Sika-certified materials, installed in strict accordance with the listed building specification and performance standards.

• Roof Rib Joint Sealing

The project included precision sealing of the silo’s roof rib joints, which extend from base to apex across the building’s curved profile. The complex geometry necessitated the development of bespoke sealing techniques, executed by our heritage-trained operatives.

• Glass Block Replacement

Selective replacement of damaged or deteriorated glass blockwork was performed to match the original façade design. Works were carried out using historically appropriate, conservation-grade materials, ensuring minimal visual impact and full compliance with heritage guidelines.

Project Challenges & Technical Solutions

This scheme involved a series of complex challenges, including:

  • Access & Safety: The silo’s height, curvature, and heritage constraints required custom-designed access solutions, incorporating non-invasive methods to protect the structure.

  • Precision Repairs: Glass block replacements were executed with meticulous care to maintain architectural integrity and listed status requirements.

  • Conservation Integration: All interventions had to harmonise with the building’s original fabric while meeting modern performance expectations for durability and weatherproofing.

Our team’s proven expertise in heritage remedials and listed structures ensured these challenges were met with technical excellence and conservation sensitivity.

Project Outcome

The successful completion of restoration works at the Tate & Lyle Sugar Silo represents a significant contribution to the ongoing regeneration of Liverpool’s dockland heritage. Henley Restoration & Remedials is proud to have supported CML Civil Engineering in preserving one of the city’s most important industrial landmarks.

The works were delivered to programme and specification, with minimal disruption to the surrounding infrastructure, and in full alignment with conservation oversight.
